As the operator of Germany's largest gas transmission pipeline system we are well aware of our responsibilities and the challenges at stake.

With the development of CHARM®, Open Grid Europe is providing an efficient leakage control method for natural gas pipeline networks and thus an alternative to the labour intensive practice of conducting on-site inspections of the pipelines with gas detection devices. The name CHARM® stands for "CH4 Airborne Remote Monitoring“, i.e. the remote detection of methane from the air.

CHARM® is a highly accurate infrared laser system integrated in a helicopter that is capable of precisely detecting even very low methane concentrations from the air. Even in the case of very complex pipeline topologies, the course of the pipeline can be detected consistently on a large scale during the flight by an automatic, highly precise scanning beam control system (autotracking), thus ensuring a reliable leak tightness inspection of the natural gas pipeline.

Open Grid Europe also offers this method as a service throughout Europe, providing the entire gas sector a highly flexible, efficient method for aerial leak tightness inspections of the natural gas pipeline network.

Features:

  • Helicopter-mounted remote gas detection system based on an infrared laser
  • Reliable detection of the slightest traces of natural gas (at flying altitudes of between 80m and 140m)
  • Operational leak detection limit of 20 l/h depending on wind conditions
  • Recognized process in accordance with DVGW codes of practice (Information Sheet G 501 "Airborne remote gas detection methods")
  • High level of geographical accuracy thanks to the automatic tracking of the pipeline route (CHARM®-Autotracking - CAT)
  • Automatic documentation of the pipeline inspection and notification of unusual occurrences in real time
  • Safe and reliable pipeline monitoring in built-up areas (conurbations) and outside developed areas guaranteed
  • Intensive data processing and priorisation of the notification results including recommended actions for the client
  • Auditing-compliant documenation with geo-referenced measurement points and detailed aerial photos
  • Optional data management tools and IT applications for on-site inspections
